Francisco Comesana may be a relative newbie on the ATP Tour, but already the 24-year-old Argentine is displaying a flair for the dramatic and a knack for taking out top players.

The World No.86 took out Alexander Zverev in dramatic fashion on Friday night, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to reach his maiden ATP semifinal.

“I was repeating myself all the match, how good is it to be a alive,” he said with a smile after his win. “Always enjoying during the entire match, I don’t know, it came to me.”

Comesana hung tough with the top-seeded German and took his chances in the second set, breaking for 4-2 and fighting off a pair of break points to force a decider.

In the decider it looked like he was out of it, but he found a way to rally from 4-1 down and cruised through the final five games to earn the hard-fought win in 2:32.

Comesana saved a pair of match points in the previous round to defeat Nicolas Jarry in three hours and 14 minutes. In the first round he needed three sets to get by Brazil’s Gustavo Heide in three hours and 21 minutes.

He produced exquisite shotmaking at 4-4, deuce in the final set, scrambling to and fro before rattling a backhand into the open court for a winner. Zverev double-faulted on the next point, handing Comesana the break, and he didn’t falter. He won four straight points to serve out the win and set a semifinal with either Francisco Cerundolo or Alexandre Muller.

With his win, Comesana improves to 2-0 against the Top-10. He also defeated No.6 Andrey Rublev in the first round at Wimbledon last year.

Defending champion Sebastian Baez will meet first time ATP semifinalist Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the bottom-half semifinal.
