Francisco Cerundolo is enjoying mastery over Alexander Zverev at the Madrid Masters.
For the second consecutive year, the Argentinian has defeated Zverev in straight sets in the round of 16. Today the 26-year-old managed a 7-5, 6-3 win to send the top seed packing and reach his third Masters 1000 quarterfinal of the young season.
Cerundolo, now 23-9 on the year, will face rising phenom Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals.
Earlier on Tuesday, Mensik became the fifth teenager to reach the quarterfinals.
“I think I have improved a lot in my consistency,” Cerundolo said on court after the win. “I learned to play bad and win matches, and getting that capacity to win playing not my best tennis – I’m super happy with what I’m doing this year.” Cerundolo recorded his fifth career Top-5 win. He managed two breaks of serve, despite winning just 12 return points. He protected his serve like a boss, saving the only break point he faced on Tuesday afternoon.
At 15-5 on clay this year, Cerundolo leads all ATP players in wins on the surface. He’ll bid to reach his second Masters semifinal against Mensik.
Munich champion Zverev sees his seven-match winning streak go up in smoke, and he drops to 21-8 on the season.
