A Spanish power outage has forced Madrid to pull the plug on the rest of Monday's schedule.
The black out impacted infrastructure causing airports to close and creating transportation issues across the nation.
Mutua Madrid Open organizers announced the cancellation of the rest of Monday's schedule on social media at about 4:45 p.m. Madrid time.
"The nationwide power-cut experienced in Spain on Monday 28 April has forced the cancellation of both the day and night sessions at the Mutua Madrid Open," tournament organizers said on social media.
Play was suspended due to the power outage after about 1 p.m. local time.
That means six scheduled ladies matches—including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. American Peyton Stearns and defending-champion Iga Swiatek against Olympic doubles silver medalist Diana Shnaider—are postponed until tomorrow.
No. 15-seeded Grigor Dimitrov held a 6-4, 5-4 lead over Jacob Fearnley when play was suspended after one hour, 21 minutes. That match is scheduled to resume tomorrow with Fearnley serving.
There were a couple of completed women's matches before the day went dark.
No. 4-seeded Coco Gauff beat Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2 to charge into her maiden Mutua Madrid Open quarterfinal.
Moments later, 17-year-old sensation Mirra Andreeva dismissed Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4 setting up the youngest-ever Madrid women's quarterfinal against the 21-year-old Gauff.
It's a rematch of the 2023 Roland Garros third round, which Gauff won in three sets.
