The stacked Berlin Open draw got a little less top heavy on Monday, as sixth-seeded Mirra Andreeva was sent packing by 25th-ranked Magdalena Frech, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.

In the midst of a subpar season, Frech dialed in a fantastic effort and surged past the talented Russian for her best win of the season, and just her third Top-50 win of 2025.

Frech had lost her previous two meetings with Andreeva in 2025, at the Australian Open in three sets and at Madrid in straights.

“I tried to stay calm even if the score wasn’t my way in the first and the second set,” the 27-year-old said. “I was trying to focus on my service games but it wasn’t easy, especially without the first serve. For sure it’s always tough to play against a Top-10 payer, especially Mirra.”

Frech broke open the match from 5-5 in the second set, winning the final eight games.

“I think I changed the style a little bit, I tried to be more aggressive in the second set, when I was 5-4, I said to myself ‘Come on, you can do better.’”

Frech served for the second set at 5-4, but was broken, she then converted her fourth break point to break back and served out the set in the 12th game.

Andreeva was undone by inconsistency in the end – she produced 27 winners against 54 unforced errors, while Frech hit 20 winners and 36 unforced.

Andreeva has now lost three consecutive matches on the grass, having gone 0-2 on the surface in 2024. She reached the round of 16 as a qualifier in 2023, but has not recorded a grass-court win since.

Badosa Advances, Sets Navarro Clash

Third-seeded Paula Badosa defeated Eva Lys 6-1, 6-3, to set a second-round clash with Emma Navarro. The American got past Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-3.

Ons Jabeur defeated Caroline Dolehide, 7-6(5), 6-1, while Rebeka Masarova defeated Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-2 to set a second-round clash with top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka.

Nine of the WTA’s Top-10 players are in the 28-player draw in Berlin.
