Camila Osorio pulled a stunner on Wednesday in the first night session of the 2025 BNP Paribas Open, defeating 2018 champion Naomi Osaka, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round.
It was a rough night for the four-time major champion, who committed 50 unforced errors – an average of 2.5 per game – and was broken three times against the 53rd-ranked Colombian.
“It’s crazy for me,” Osorio said on court. “It’s a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court. I was excited and looking forward to playing a champion like Naomi, I can’t believe I won.” The Colombian became the first woman from her country to ever defeat a former WTA World No.1. She will face 22nd-seeded Dane Clara Tauson in the second round.
Osaka saved a match point while serving at 3-5 in the second set, but Osorio held her nerve on serve in the next game. She saved four break points and finally closed out the one hour and 31-minute triumph with an inside-out forehand winner.
Osaka drops to 6-3 on the season with the loss, and 14-5 lifetime at Indian Wells.
“I don't think it was too good on my end, but I'm really honestly just happy that they let me play on Stadium 1 again, and it was just really good to get the experience to play another night match,” Osaka said.
