Aryna Sabalenka said it ever so eloquently on Wednesday, after she put down Marie Bouzkova’s upset bid with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory in Centre Court.
“I hope it’s no upsets anymore in this tournament, if you know what I mean,” she said with a smile.
The top-seeded Belarusian is through to the second round after a 95-minute win that sets a third-round clash with the winner of tonight’s highly anticipated match between former Grand Slam champions Marketa Vondrousova and Emma Raducanu.
“Honestly, it’s very sad to see so many top players lose in the first round,” Sabalenka told the crowd. “You better focus on yourself and stay away from the results. Of course you are going to know the overall pictures but take it one step at a time and do your best every time you are out here competing.”
Sabalenka won 30 of 34 first-serve points and rallied back from 6-5 down in the first set to take it in a tiebreak. The two-time semifinalist improved to 13-5 lifetime at Wimbledon with her win, and 44-8 on the season.
Keys Moves Through
Four Top-10 seeds fell in the first-round, by Sabalenka and Madison Keys have led the way into round three early on Day 3. Keys took out Serbia’s Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2 to set a third-round encounter with Germany’s Laura Siegemund.
The American, bidding to become the first woman to win the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the same season since Serena Williams a decade ago, is up to 32-9 in her best season as a pro.
Siegemund took out Leylah Fernandez 6-2 6-3 to become the oldest woman to reach the third round at Wimbledon since 1970.
