Here’s what we’ll be watching on Day 9.
Americans in the hunt
Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula and Hailey Baptiste will all be in action for Team USA on Monday, with former runner-up Gauff, who know owns a 23-5 record in Paris, facing Ekaterina Alexandrova, while Pegula, takes on World No.361 Lois Boisson of France.
Keys, who saved three match points to take out Sofia Kenin in the third round, will face Hailey Baptiste, who reached the fourth round at a major for the first time on Saturday by taking out Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Baptiste actually earned her first WTA win against Keys, way back in 2019, but has lost the last two.
Their last meeting was won by Keys, who saved match points to defeat Baptiste, 6-4 4-6 7-6(4).
“The last time we played, I think it was last year at Indian Wells, and I had a few match points in that match as well,” Baptiste said. “So I'm definitely looking to play her again and change the narrative, because that one definitely stung. I think she got a little bit lucky getting out of there, for sure.”
Keys has nothing but praise for 23-year-old Baptiste.
“I think Hailey is a great player,” she said. “I think she's been a great player, and I feel like she's really kind of found her form in the past year and a half, two years, but especially the past couple of months she's had some really great wins and is playing some really good tennis.
“I'm not surprised. I have seen her growing up. I think she's had incredible talent the entire time. So really happy for her to see all of the success that she's having, kind of putting that all together and climbing up the rankings. “All that said, I think it's going to be a really tough match. She's very talented. She has a lot of tangibles, and she knows how to kind of mix up paces, but can also, all of a sudden, absolutely crack the ball. Going to be a really tough match, but I am looking forward to it.”
Collision Course?
Jannik Sinner and Jack Draper are heading for a quarterfinal clash to die for in Paris, but before they can meet they must get through respective challenges on Monday. Sinner, who has yet to drop a set and who surrendered just ten games in his last two matches, faces Andrey Rublev, while fifth-seeded Draper, who powered past Joao Fonseca in straight sets on Saturday, will face Alexander Bublik.
Popcorn and More
Alexander Zverev faces Tallon Griekspoor for the tenth time and the seventh time since the start of last season. The pair have split two meetings this year, with Griekspoor winning in a third-set breaker at Indian Wells, and Zverev coming through 6-4 in the third en route to the title on the Munich clay.
Zverev is not tired of playing Griekspoor – yet.
“I play him almost every week,” he said with a laugh. “I don't know. He's the guy that I played the most in the last two years. I enjoy playing him. It's always fun, weird matches. Most of the time high level. Some of the times, just crazy things happening.
“I'm going to get ready. I'm going to prepare myself for a battle again, and yeah, if I continue playing the way I'm playing, I have confidence in my game.”
