One of the most widely adored and admired Wimbledon champions said goodbye to Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Two-time champion Petra Kvitova, who dazzled fans with her high-octane brand of grass-court tennis, fell to Emma Navarro, 6-3, 6-1, and thus ended her Wimbledon career with a record of 38 wins and 14 losses.
Afterwards, the 35-year-old Czech, who won her titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, addressed the Court No.1 crowd during a ceremony.
“To have another chance to play one more time at Wimbledon, it means a lot to me,” Kvitova told the crowd. “This place holds the best memories I could wish for. I never dreamed of winning Wimbledon, and I won it twice.”
“I will miss Wimbledon for sure. I will miss tennis and I will miss you fans, but I’m ready for the next chapter of life as well. I can’t wait to be back as a member – which is still very unreal for me – and seeing all of you again.” Kvitova, who returned from maternity leave in February after giving birth to her first child, Petr, last year, plans to finish her season at the US Open. The former World No.2 made her first Wimbledon appearance in 2008. She went 27-3 at the Championships from 2010 to 2014 and defeated Maria Sharapova (6-3, 6-4) and Eugenie Bouchard (6-3, 6-0) in dominant final performances in 2011 and 2014.
