Evans vs Djokovic
A pair of 35-plus veterans – of very different stature – will lock horns in the first Centre Court match of Day 4, as 24-time major champion faces wild card and fan fave Dan Evans in the second round.
Here’s the kicker: It’s Evans who leads the pair’s head-to-head 1-0. The current 154 lives for moments like these on tour, and he’ll be eager to embrace the challenge in front of what is sure to be a supportive crowd on Thursday.
Evans, who defeated Djokovic at Monte-Carlo in 2021, is trying to work his way back into the Top 100 so he can continue playing on tour without having to haggle for wild cards every where he goes. Djokovic is bidding to turn back the clock and win his 25th major title, which would also make him the oldest men’s singles Grand Slam champion in history.
An intriguing matchup.
Pick: Djokovic in four sets, not as easy as some might expect.
Opportunity Knocks
23-year-old Hailey Baptiste and Victoria Mboko each had breakthrough performances at Roland-Garros last month. Baptiste reached the second week at a major for the first time, while Mboko, still only 18 and ranked 97, reached the third round from qualifying.
Here at Wimbledon, Mboko squandered five match points in the final round of qualifying but got in as a lucky loser and has made her way through with a win over Magdalena Frdch, the No.25 seed. Baptiste, ranked 55, defeated Sorana Cirstea in the first round.
Up next on Day 4, a chance for one of them to get into the third round at Wimbledon on main draw debut.
Pick: Baptiste in three, on experience.
Jack's Back
Jack Draper heads to No.1 Court on Thursday to try to accomplish something he has never done before. The No.4 seed will face former runner-up Marin Cilid as he attempts to reach the third round for the first time.
The 23-year-old Brit is a heavy favorite to win, but Cilic, who defeated Raphael Collignon in the first round, has been in fine form of late. He just won the Nottingham title, and returned to the Top 100 for the first time since January of 2023.
Pick: Draper in four, with the fourth set won in a tiebreak.
Enjoy.
